The Maths Floooor

So last week I released part 2 of the isometric tutorial, including a fun section on basic algebra and how we were able to derive a screen to tile formula from our tile to screen formula. Did you enjoy this? Was it worth covering? Let me know.

Video Subtitles

Subtitling videos takes forever. While I write a 'script' when making a tutorial, it is not a transcript. It is usually just a sequence of actions, reminders and code snippets.

So having to go through a video transcribing it and timing it is... a lot of work. When your videos are as long as mine.

It's something I've wanted to have for a long time though, and would then open the door to translating those subtitles for other audiences that can't really use my work right now.

I'm thinking about making this a new Patreon goal. Perhaps replacing my current $1500 goal and moving ad-free further up to 1750 or 2000. These are big goals I don't know that I'll ever reach, but as much as I want ad free videos, subtitles would be a way bigger win. The way this goal would make that possible is I could start paying someone to work on subtitles for the videos. I only have a vague idea of the costs there, so this plan is very draft-stage-only but I wanted to know what you all thought of the idea?

The current $1500 goal is something that is important to me, but each time it has been discussed I've gotten the impression it's not as important to you guys. So pushing it further back in favor of something more immediately beneficial for the quality of my work could be a win for everyone.

This Week

I've had to book a whole host of real life appointments, start dealing with my income tax, and generally fulfill a lot of chores so this week has been off to a slow start. I released a couple of GMMeetup videos which you should go check out. Especially the one starring Gary Napper (former lead designer on Alien Isolation among others!) on why he takes part in game jams.

I'm going to try and catch up on some cool tools & GM related software I've been pitched after my PixelFX Designer review. I love doing collaborative stuff so I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of it. Also we'll run another Poll for Wizard Club members very soon, so keep an eye out!

You might try requesting subtitling help in the video descriptions and see what you get. Like a wiki, you will often find that people who enjoy doing it are eager to help, which would prevent a huge time sink on your part. (It's clear that you put a lot of time and effort into editing the videos for clarity and concise-ness already!)

Maybe but I always prefer people get paid for doing good work and tend to be uncomfortable taking volunteers (especially for something I profit from!). I don't want to exploit the goodwill of others. I get they might not feel that way about it but I would!
