Schemas.

- At egscomics

My apologies! When I was told this wasn't up yet, I had assumed I'd scheduled it incorrectly, but I somehow completely forgot to do it at all!

Also, I originally gave Rich George's nose by accident.

Commentary

A glimpse of some of the rules in Rich's head.

My understanding is that, in psychology, these would be referred to as schema

Rich, welcome to discovering that toxic masculinity is, well, toxic. It can be a tough row to hoe, but you'll be a better man for it.

M.

I was going to say something like that. Here's hoping Rich comes out of this with some better understanding.

MiqoRems

paradigm shifting so fast he's gonna get whiplash

AstroChaos

Appropriately enough, had this gone up on time it would have been posted on the day of Epiphany. 😌 I'm guessing not intentional on Dan's part, but I'm highly amused just the same.

Stephen Gilberg

I'm calling him Rich Van Winkle, because he acts like he missed the last 20 years.

Opus the Poet

They're not judging him out loud, because most of that "Manly" stuff has been judged to be toxic and bad for you. Sand being Toxic is way worse than being Unmanly.

And so begins the journey from Toxic to Ally.

Wild Card

Well, this game has just became enlightening for Rich. Character growth, who expected it??

"🎵When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school It's a wonder I can think at all And though my lack of education hasn't hurt me none I can read the writing on the wall🎵"

Even more sadly, people who fail to live up to the toxic macho image are not only judged, but often enough become targets of violence for being "unmanly" (e.g. "you must be homosexual if you are unmasculine, therefore we must unleash our homophobia upon you".)

Kodachrome, now give me those nice bright colors, give me the greens of Summer, make me think all the world's a sunny day...

Probably more important, the judgement made was in the opposite direction that Rich was expecting. I remember being raised in that toxic masculinity hell, and how hanging out with the LGBTQAPK* crowd not only straightened me out, but many of those people I knew still in the toxic crap actually seemed to respect me more since I was no longer filled with my own identity doubts. In the end, it didn't matter that what was inside was not something that they woud've accepted. It was inside, they couldn't see. Just the fact that I was no longer worried about their approval was all it really took to get some of it.

Because you're in a group of gamers who know how to RPG better than you. They all understand that you're talking about Larry the character, not Larry the player, and Larry the character's character sheet *says* she's hot. So there's litterally nothing wrong with what you said even if you were playing with people who bought into any of that toxic stuff. Also because everybody's actually breathing an internal sigh of relief because they were pretty sure you were that guy.
