Commentary

This is what I originally planned for the previous comic, but Nanase would have said Rich's name in a (now cut) first panel.

It turns out I barely fit what I wanted in three, so huzzah for this alternate timeline we all now live in.

And no, Nanase isn't going to ask someone to go easy on her girlfriend in a challenge. That's not how Nanase rolls.

The Magic Hair Fairies (TM) are at it again

To be fair, we know that it would really irritate Elliott for someone to go easy on him on a challenge he's accepted. While her personality has certainly evolved quite a bit from her creation and she's very much her own person, I'm betting that aspect is still just as true for Ellen.

I'd love so very much if this storyline ends with Rich being more confident and comfortable with challenging people, regardless of gender, because he learns that it's in the challenge that we can connect with each other always. But also, I want him to fucking learn that it's the personality connections that matter most and not the angle hidden in the persons underwear. (This is fully biased by my asexual-biromantic identity.)

Heh. Martial artists take challenges very seriously. Going easy is the greatest insult you could give.

To my mind it's like siblings: distinct personalities but definitely still some shared core traits

KC

Nanase be channeling her inner sayan. "'Go easy?!' Do not insult me!"

Some Ed

That depends on the martial artist and possibly their culture. It's probably true more often than not, but the one thing I've learned well is that people are more varied than I can possibly imagine, and even after knowing this for years, I keep finding out over and over again that it's still true. That said, it is tending to happen less frequently as my understanding of the possible range expands and the number of people I interact with decreases...

Wild Card

Rich is trying hard to not look too low, for his own health

Some Ed

Not everyone is really that open to being challenged. That said, he's mostly dealing with Ellen, Nanase, and George here. Grace might be involved, but to the extent she's still a bit shy about being challenged, Ellen and Nanase will cover for her. So it seems unlikely that Rich would learn the lesson I mentioned, which makes it more likely that he'd learn the first lesson you suggested. I agree with your second lesson, but don't see how he'd get there from here. TL;DR:Yes on point A, but that there exist contexts where that's not the best lesson. Yes on point B, but I don't see a path there.
