Ancient Canon.

Commentary

This actually references EXTREMELY early EGS.

How early? Things I drew in high school before the comic officially began. So early that it predates the comic as we know it.

Nonetheless, I've always considered it a bit of canon lurking in the shadows that Elliot, Tedd, and Sarah played some tabletop roleplaying games together, and that Elliot was the one running it.

Revisiting that is one of the reasons why I decided this was a storyline I wanted to do.

You ever play RIFTS? I feel like Tedd would have really enjoyed it back in the day, and everyone else in the cast would despise it

Randall Wald

I played Rifts once in college...we needed to rewrite half of the combat rules (they were clearly written to only facilitate one-on-one duels, not actual group combat), plus things were massively imbalanced due to armored vs. unarmored combat (some characters were mid-tier in both, others were weak without armor but absolute monsters with it). Still, fun just to see some of the crazy ideas.

Seven words to inspire terror in a Rifts group: mutant weasel Juicer in a Flying Titan. Blame the GM, I was going to make her a crazy. And he let the Accelerated metabolism and Juicer speed stack. Madness...

Dan Curtis

I've always wanted to play a table top game but have never been able to get a group together.

Hurley

Since anything Palladian could be brought into Rifts, we wound up bringing Macross Varitech Fighters into our game. The one rule the GM gave us was once the ammo was out we'd have to retrofit local weapons to the airframes, but after that it was a blast! Basically Glitterboy Transformers. Oh, and the Mutant Deinonychus I pulled in from TMNT the Role Playing Game. That was a fun one too.

There are online virtual tabletop (VTT) communities where you can get recruited into campaigns if there is no local gaming scene for you. You don't get to physically roll dice but it's still a load of fun.

Oh Ellen beware, down that dark path are many temptations which lead to budget outlays many would consider, excessive.

Dan Merget

I'm guessing this happened in the Second Life universe? Elliot/Tedd/Sarah have been a close-knit trio for years, but Ellen didn't exist in the main universe until recently, and she wasn't ready to casually hang out with either Tedd or Sarah at first (One Way Road and MV5). If Ellen led a gaming group in the main universe, I'd picture it involving Grace & Tensaided rather than Tedd & Sarah.

Jenora Feuer

I still remember the bit from the comic Murphy's Rules: "Games That Should Never Be Played: GURPS Rifts." (Comic image of GM struggling under a pile of books almost as tall as he was.)

Thisguy

I know Tensaided once offered Grace if she wanted to play a rogue in a TTRPG. I think she may have taken up the offer.

wargrunt42

I'm thinking the RPG they played is most likely Big Eyes, Small Mouth. It's an anime role playing game that dates back to the early 2000's, the second edition released roughly around the same time the comic started.

Rich's imaginings are getting old really fast.

Anonymous

You gotta admit Larry keeps scoring sympathy points while Rich only manages to get more misogynistic with every strip. I don't know where this is going, but I'd like to see the two discuss this. I don't mind Rich being depicted as being judgemental and full of preconceptions, we all know that kind of behaviour exists and is all too frequent in the nerd society, actually I think it is a good thing this phenomenon gets more visibility and can be discussed openly. Which is exactly why, in my opinion, Larry's new character development should be significant enough for both of them that they need to address the point (as awkward as they can make it) after Ellen and Nanase are gone. (hope i'm being clear... English is not my first language and this specific topic mandates the use of some complicated and/or unusual words, I'm pretty sure some of the subtelty of my point got lost in the process, sorry if the whole thing ends up being confusing).

Prof Sai

I think Ellen still remembers Elliot’s older memories as her own. Does that make her mentally 36 years old?

Prof Sai

I picture Rich as someone who just can’t get close enough to a woman to learn what women are really like. He has effectively never met one who isn’t trying to push him away, so he only has negative experiences to go off of.

Anonymous

@Prof that, paired with a somewhat exaggerated wishful thinking.

Your patrons demand to see these ancient drawings. ;)

Daryl Sawyer

Part of the problem may be that someone who looks like Rich needs some degree of charm (even grumpy Georgish charm) to have good interactions. Someone who looks like Larry may need only to dress a little different and not be a total douche.

John Trauger

Rich isn't misogynistic. He;'s a teenage boy. He has a skull full of mush and rampaging hormones. He doesn't know how to process girls/women because he literally has never learned. And to be fair he hasn't had all that much tme to even try. If he's 18, he's only had 4-6 years. You want a potental misogynist, try Bad Tom, the guy who tried to seduce Susan.

Diego Rossi

Elliot doesn't seem like the kind of person that will be a GM. He will learn the rules very well, but he will be a bit too predictable. Ellen has a bit more chaos and probably would be a better GM.

Dan Merget

Prof Sai: I like the idea that Ellen is reporting what Elliot did as part of her own past. She doesn't like the claim that she and Elliot used to be one person who became two people, but it is a valid way of viewing the situation. Regarding her mental age: maybe closer to 25? I don't think the fact that she lived ages 0-5 twice would count towards her mental age. Even if she remembers those early years, I doubt you can learn much by experiencing potty training for a second time. Similarly, the life lessons learned from ages 5-10 probably had a lot of overlap: she undoubtedly gained a few new formative experiences, such as her empathy towards second-life "I'm no good" Tedd, but she was mostly a dumb kid under adult supervision re-learning the same lessons she inherited from main-universe Elliot. Most of the benefits of living two lives probably occurred in the final 6-8 years, once she was grown enough to have complex thoughts and make meaningful decisions.

Dan Merget

Rich actually gained some respect from me for wanting a competent partner who could challenge him intellectually. A depressing number of guys are looking for an obedient accessory who can serve him in the kitchen and bedroom.

A few of them got posted as "Filler" (as the sketchbook section was called then) entries back in July & September 2004.

ijuinkun

Unfortunately, it seems that his method of seeking such a partner is to issue his challenge to everyone, and then see who accepts.
