Grace's Turn!

- At egscomics

Commentary

Those last couple of sound effects probably shouldn't be taken literally.

Probably.

I mean, maybe one of the students is a fan of fighting games, and they said those?

The exact spacing and angles in panel two also probably shouldn't be taken literally. I just felt hitting the borders illustrated what happened with the greatest clarity.

Even then, I tossed in arrows for good measure.

Ouch, that must've really hurt

Wild Card

That was a double-ooch!!

Windscion

Pride cometh before a fall.

Thisguy

And everyone realised the obvious truth of the matter. Grace always holds back because she’s likely to injure herself (and others) if she doesn’t.

KC

I feel like this one comic is the perfect encapsulation of Grace. Overwhelming superhuman power but perhaps not the best control. Awe inspiring yet also a lovable doof.

Some Ed

I'm imagining panel 2 being compressed fairly much apart from the volley ball, with the point of impact on the floor much closer to Grace, and the point of impact on the wall and ceiling much farther away. I mean, I don't remember ever being in a gym where the ceiling wasn't at least two stories up, and most of them, it was more than that. I mean, they'd have retractable bleachers that would usually go up a couple of stories, and yet there was never a headroom problem above them. And then there was my high school gym, which had a balcony and three more stories of retractable bleachers above that first set.

Viktor

Every set of gym plans I've seen has had 30'-40' walls, and is 100'x70' at a minimum. So yes, Dan had to shrink things down significantly.

Servo Kamen

Yeah, should have seen that coming. LOL

Dan Merget

The ball bouncing off the panel borders looks cooler than a scale model of the gym. The art gets non-literal at times, like when conversations over a text-messenger app gets represented as if the avatars were talking.

Windscion

After this, Spike may well beg Grace to hold back.

Anonymous

And when conversations that are talking get represented as text, even.

Applestone

Hilarious! XD Also damn, that ball hit the ground, the far side of the hall, the ceiling and Grace before she even started descending from her jump? Damn, she should totally join the Anime martial arts dojo if she weren't a pacifist.

Anonymous

I'm pretty sure that isn't meant to be physics at all. I mean, if Grace hit the ball hard enough to knock herself out, it would probably explode rather than bounce around. Grace is pretty tough. See also "even if it didn't explode it would punch right through the ceiling."

Narzain

Well, Greg has been training her. Specifically so she has non-"crush them all" options in a fight.

Diego Rossi

I was expecting the ball to explode as son as Grace hit it.

Some Ed

I believe what happened was she hit the ball so hard that she got some additional loft time from the impact. I'm guessing the principal of Moperville North supplied Moperville South with a generous number of murals, and the principal of Moperville South wisely stored them above the gym. There were enough of these murals to provide the necessary reinforcement the ceiling needed to survive the impact of the ball when it hit the apex of its trajectory.

stupid panel borders....
