Commentary

I don't consider it hugely in-character for either of them to go running to Grace in exactly that way, but rule of funny demanded it.

Besides, even if I presented them differently on the outside, anyone running to Grace to settle a debate on fictional canon is definitely making that face on the inside.

Grace makes a weird sorta sense. She an outside judge. She doesn’t understand a lot of the crazy fan arguments, so can look at it from a more logical view.

Paul Rendell

While I could see Justin doing something like this, Luke would likely still be too scared of grace for Justin to convince him to do this.

David Fenger

In the main storyline that'd be true... at this point in time. It seems likely he'll hang out at the game store a lot, and thus learn to deal with Grace due to exposure.

KiTA

$5 says she's never read any of it, never even heard of the franchise, which is gonna break both their brains.

Daniel

Justin *introduced* her to the franchise, so she knows that much. But she likely never did read any of the tie-in fiction.

Daniel

Honestly, Justin is totally right. Timothy Zahn was by far the best of the EU authors, introducing the best characters. There were other good authors, don't get me wrong, but Zahn was the clear leader of the pack. (I am using the past tense because I haven't gotten involved in the tie-in novels since they canned the EU, aside from reading 2017's Thrawn--haven't even gotten around to the two sequels to that one. Didn't even know they existed prior to looking it up just now, honestly...)

Applestone

Running to Grace for problem-solving is one of THE best things people could do.

James C

I mean, while Dan has mentioned Star Wars in commentary, he's also specifically stated that that's an example/inspiration, and that the series they are *actually* discussing has deliberately been left vague and undefined, and heavily implied that they might not actually be talking about Star Wars.

Lak

That last panel has a serious: MMMMMOOOOOOMMMM!!!! energy (though Grace is a great arbitration choice)

John Trauger

Introduce these guys to, or remind them of, the term "headcanon"

Daryl Sawyer

"Other good authors" included, IIRC, Michael Stackpole, author of the legendary Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron series.

Some Ed

I think she understands more of the crazy fan arguments than you might think. And not necessarily in the way you want her to understand them, if they are your fan arguments. That said, she does have an outside judge perspective still. As much as she'd like to be social, we're all too alien to her lived experience for her to really accept either point of view as her own. True, when you're asking for someone to judge your crazy fan arguments, you're almost certainly not going to want the person to say, "You're both wrong. It's really " But I don't think she'd do that. At least, not *too* much.

Some Ed

I think she has probably at least read Star Wars, and was appropriately horrified. Which is to say, a lot less than she was horrified by World War One and World War Two.

Some Ed

That depends on ones problem, now doesn't it? But in this case, sure.

ijuinkun

“Zahn” is German for “tooth”. I don’t know how seriously I can take any novel written by Timmy The Tooth.

Applestone

Well, "problem-solving" doesn't mean "do everything Grace says as if it's holy scripture". She's helpful and willing to talk things through and knows that she doesn't know everything, so I don't see any problem where it wouldn't be helpful to ask her, even if the only thing she can contribute is encouragement (like for stuff that requires specific high-level expert knowledge).

Well, read any of his novels, including (even especially) outside of the SW universe and you will see how you can take them seriously. Okay, not everything, and it will also depend on your tastes (the first Cobra books are a little dated in their narration, for example), but the Conquerors' trilogy and Quadrail series are very interesting, along with the Dragonback YA series and several of his one-shots (Manta's gift...).
