Honestly you should watch episode 1 of the 1999 version of Hunter x Hunter, or at least skim through it. i didnt find out about it till last week lol, but it introduces Kite and he has like 10-15 mins of content rather than the very short flashback with gon in this episode just watch the scenes with kite, its odd that they removed it for the 2011 version

The one thing i dislike about this arc is when they kill these random new characters, why do they have to be so cute and innocent it couldve been any random humans.... pain

I think it's because they want the story to hit harder that they kill off the cute new characters after letting you get a tiny bit attached to them
