More often than I'd like to admit, a drawing will come from just a funny turn of phrase or a silly idea. When Shang-Chi first came out, of course my mind went to toe rings. I've had "Shang-Chi and the 10 Toe Rings" in the back of my mind for awhile. The trick was, how would they tickle him? Vibrate really fast? I wracked my brain for a way to visualize magical tickling rings, and finally settled on the idea that they'd send out magic tendrils to tease and torment their wearer. Wenwu knows that the only way his son can take his place as leader of the Ten Rings organization is if he's fearless and strong. The toe rings make him face his greatest weakness and fear: his ticklishness!
