Chapter 2434: Extra - Tang Wenqian Resigns from Office

Upon seeing Kang Shuxian, Qiao Rou congratulated her and then inquired about her situation over the years.

As the two sisters chatted, Yuan Gui felt it was best not to linger. He played with Qiao Rou's two children for a while, then excused himself to go to the county office to find Lu Wu.

Lu Wu had just finished his training and was covered in sweat, so he quickly went to take a bath and then came out.

"I'll go request leave from the county magistrate, and then we can have a drink," Lu Wu said.

"Sounds good."

When Lu Wu emerged again, he was carrying two bottles of wine. He smiled at Yuan Gui and said, "I just got this wine recently. You know I have two kids at home, so I can't drink there. I thought those wine-loving guys would open it first, but it turns out I still have it. Let's go to our old spot."

As they walked and chatted, Yuan Gui glanced back at the county office.

If Tang Wenqian were still in office, he would probably go in to say hello.

Unfortunately, Tang Wenqian had resigned from his official position last year.

After his conversation with Meng Yunzheng back then, Tang Wenqian had made up his mind. However, except for Meng Yunzheng and his wife, it seemed that no one else was aware of his intentions.

For the past few years, Tang Wenqian had been diligently serving as a local official. He was a capable and practical official.

Moreover, Chenggu County was quite unique. Both the Emperor and General Qi Lie paid special attention to it. With support from Xiang Weinan, the county had prospered even more under Tang Wenqian's administration.

Originally, with his abilities, if he gained more experience over the years and received a recommendation from Xiang Weinan, he would surely be transferred back to the capital.

However, to everyone's surprise, he had submitted his resignation letter last year.

When he first handed in his resignation, it had startled even the Emperor, who thought he might follow in the footsteps of Meng Yunzheng and do something else.

It wasn't until they understood that Tang Wenqian wanted to retake the imperial examination and earn the title of a legitimate scholar before returning to the court that the Emperor breathed a sigh of relief.

In fact, upon closer inspection, this path was not without its merits. Going from a juren to an official was not as prestigious as becoming an imperial scholar. Even with Xiang Weinan's support, he would still face criticism based on his "educational background."

The Emperor had approved Tang Wenqian's decision.

However, Tang Wenqian's parents couldn't understand it, especially his mother, who thought he had gone mad.

She even believed that Tang Wen Qian was doing this to defy her. A few years ago, the year after Shu Yu got married, Tang Wenqian's mother had pressured him to get married quickly.

He was already getting old, and by that time, he was twenty-five. Who gets married at such an old age? If he hadn't become an official, no one would dare to gossip, and he might have been criticized and ridiculed.

Tang Wenqian's mother believed that Tang Wenqian was still thinking about Shu Yu. She even contemplated going back to Dong'an Prefecture to persuade Shu Yu to help her talk some sense into him.

Tang Wenqian was irritated by this. He had promised that he would marry within half a year and told his mother not to meddle.

His mother had remained calm for half a year. In the fifth month, Tang Wen Qian really did intend to get married. However, the girl he chose wasn't the highborn lady his mother had expected. Despite his position as a county magistrate, there were plenty of eligible women from prestigious families to choose from. Instead, he picked an orphan without family or property.

But at this point, his mother couldn't do anything about it. It was better than him stubbornly refusing to marry.

She could only accept the orphan girl, and even though she was disappointed, she was just relieved that he was finally getting married. An orphan girl was an orphan girl; at least she was efficient. His mother couldn't argue with Tang Wenqian anymore and focused on the idea of them having children soon.

In the end, she could focus on raising her grandchildren.

However, several years had passed, and the two of them hadn't shown any progress.
