Chapter 2131: Involving the Song Family

Aunt Hong found it difficult to speak about this family matter, as it was a source of shame, and her children's behavior had put her in a tough spot.

Originally, she didn't want to mention it, but this matter had also involved the Song family. She gritted her teeth and decided to explain it more clearly.

"When you brought Gouwa to say goodbye to me years ago, you gave me thirty taels of silver. After you left, my eldest daughter-in-law came and asked me if you received anything from you. Naturally, I denied it; otherwise, they would have had their eyes on that money."

Aunt Hong had scolded them, saying that they had no reason to give her any benefits since they had handed her an extra child for no apparent reason. They weren't free meals.

However, even though she had taken this stance, her eldest son, Hong Lao Da, and Yu Shi still harbored suspicions. After several failed attempts to probe her, they took advantage of her absence and searched her room.

Surprisingly, they did find three taels of silver. Of course, this silver wasn't given to her by Shu Yu; it was money Aunt Hong had saved before her husband passed away.

For all these years, that was all the money she had, and if it weren't for this, she wouldn't have parted with Gouwa.

Aunt Hong explained that she had saved this money herself, and Hong Lao Da and Yu Shi believed her.

However, even if it was only three taels of silver, they were unwilling to let it go. They wanted to get it from the old lady's hands, either under the pretext of giving gifts for the children's birthdays or claiming they needed it for doctors' visits or health tonics.

In short, they came up with various excuses. Aunt Hong knew that they wouldn't give up until they had taken all the money. At the time, she had thought simply to avoid trouble and had gradually given in, distributing the money bit by bit.

Eventually, they were satisfied after digging out most of it.

Aunt Hong finally found some peace, but her life... began to change.

Hong Lao Da and his wife felt that they couldn't get any benefits from her anymore, so their attitude naturally changed. They not only resorted to name-calling but also began to differentiate between food and other necessities.

Sometimes, when she returned late, there wasn't even any cold food left for her.

Of course, Aunt Hong didn't take their mistreatment lying down. She scolded her eldest son for being unfilial and her daughter-in-law for stirring up trouble in the family. But even though she wasn't a pushover, her life became increasingly difficult, with no peace.

Aunt Hong felt completely disheartened, but she was especially thankful that she had hidden the thirty taels of silver elsewhere and that she had sent Gouwa to his uncle's place.

After that incident, Aunt Hong lost all hope for her son and daughter-in-law. She was even less likely to bring out the money she had on hand.

Then, at the end of the year two years ago...

"Two years ago, at the end of the year, there was chaos in the capital, with many rebels appearing outside the city, hiding in the mountains."

Shu Yu knew about this; when the chaos erupted in Chenggu County at the end of the year, it diverted attention, and shortly after, action was taken in the capital. From what Aunt Hong was saying, it seemed that this matter had also involved them?

Aunt Hong continued, "There were many of them, and they hid in a area in the mountains. The Hong family's burial grounds happened to be there. Later, when the rebellion ended, the burial grounds were also damaged. You also know that when Gouwa's father passed away, the Song family's enemies didn't know where he was buried and were watching, so we didn't dare bury him in the Song family's graveyard. My husband made the decision to bury him near the Hong family's burial grounds. So, when the Hong family's burial grounds were destroyed, his grave also suffered."

Little Song Le became nervous when he heard this. "Was my father's grave damaged?"
