Chapter 1855: Being Beaten

The group of inmates who had been engrossed in their brawl turned their heads upon hearing the sound. Seeing the warden at the door, they quickly let go and moved aside.

Cold sweat formed on the warden's forehead. He explained to Shu Yu in a hushed tone, "County Princess, these people are not very obedient. Our prison is severely understaffed, so..."

"I understand." Among the prisoners locked up in the cell, some were likely genuinely wronged like Zhou Tiedong, but many were actual offenders. Some individuals were incorrigible and even resorted to causing trouble due to their pent-up frustration.

Not just in historical times, even in modern prisons, such incidents occur.

Shu Yu glanced over the fighters with a furrowed brow and asked, "Who is Zhou Tiedong?"

As her voice fell, the eyes of all the prisoners turned toward the man on the ground.

So, among the two who were being beaten, one of them was Zhou Tiedong?

Shu Yu looked at the warden, who felt a jolt of anxiety. He quickly pulled out the keys and unlocked the cell door in front of him. He walked toward Zhou Tiedong in the perplexed gazes of the other prisoners.

Zhou Tiedong lay on the ground, struggling to sit up with some effort. Anxious, he looked at the approaching warden.

A nearby inmate laughed and asked, "Warden, has Zhou Tiedong gotten into trouble again? Is he going to be dragged out for execution?"

Other inmates snickered softly.

Hearing this, Zhou Tiedong's body couldn't help but tremble. The other inmate who was being beaten alongside him looked at him with concern.

The warden glared at the speaking inmate and coldly chuckled, "Don't talk nonsense." Who's to say who's going to be dragged out for execution?

He changed his expression and squatted down, speaking kindly to Zhou Tiedong, "Zhou Tiedong, you're in luck. County Princess Wen'an heard about your case and personally investigated it for your retrial. If you're innocent, you can be released."

Zhou Tiedong raised his head in shock, his voice hoarse, "What did you say?"

The other inmates in the same cell, who had been laughing moments ago, had their expressions abruptly change upon hearing this. They straightened up instantly.

The warden didn't pay attention to them. "Alright, come with me first."

He reached out to help Zhou Tiedong, who had been injured in the leg during the beating. Standing up proved to be quite a struggle.

Shu Yu considered having Lu Sanzhu help, but she saw him retreating five steps away from the fierce-looking inmates in the cell. She couldn't help but be speechless.

Well, she had known her Third Uncle's personality for a long time now.

Turning back, she saw that the warden, who was assisting Zhou Tiedong, had been blocked by one of the inmates.

This person was the one who had spoken earlier. Judging by the situation, he seemed to be the leader of these inmates.

He spoke with skepticism, "Warden, are you mistaken? The trial is the business of County Magistrate, or at worst, there are the constables. How could a County Princess interfere with matters in the prison? This doesn't follow proper procedures. Did you accept some sort of bribe to side with Zhou Tiedong?"

The warden furrowed his brows, and Zhou Tiedong's expression turned anxious.

Suddenly, Shu Yu burst into laughter. Seeing her smile, Lu Sanzhu couldn't help but swallow hard.

Then he watched as Shu Yu entered the cell gate and walked directly toward the inmate who had spoken.

The inmate turned to look at her, his gaze somewhat malicious.

Of course, he wouldn't believe that the girl in front of him was the so-called County Princess the warden mentioned. After all, this was a prison—dirty, chaotic, and why would a prestigious County Princess come here for an inconspicuous figure like Zhou Tiedong? Don't joke around.
