Chapter 1782: Yuan Gui's Astonishment

Yuan Gui lifted his hand to wave at them, and someone who seemed familiar poked their head out from behind a courtyard wall. They whispered to him, "You're all back? Are you alright? I heard the county town was in turmoil. There were bandits that came to our village too, but luckily the general sent by the court had set up traps at the village entrance in advance, so we were spared."

"Yuan Gui, did you come back from the county town? You didn't encounter any danger on the way, right?" Someone took the lead, and villagers on both sides of the road began to peek their heads out from behind their walls.

As Yuan Gui continued walking, he replied loudly, "We're fine. Those rebels have been captured, and the city gates are open. You can come and go freely now. I need to get back home first. We can chat later."

People wanted to ask more questions, but when they saw Shu Yu sitting inside the carriage, they closed their mouths and just stared at them curiously.

When the carriage finally stopped at Granny Fang's doorstep, Yuan Gui finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Granny Fang was helped down from the carriage, and she took out her keys to unlock the courtyard gate. The place looked desolate, with a few piles of snow in the corners that hadn't yet melted.

Fortunately, Yuan Gui had already repaired the roof of their house earlier, so it wasn't damaged by the snow.

Granny Fang told Yuan Gui, "You can take Miss Lu around the village while I tidy up the house."

Yuan Gui had wanted to help, but after a moment's thought, he agreed and tied the carriage to the side. He turned to Shu Yu and said, "Miss Lu, this way, please."

Shu Yu glanced at Yuan Gui and nodded in agreement. With Yuan Gui leading the way, they walked leisurely.

After a few steps, Yuan Gui hesitated and asked, "Miss Lu, you... seem quite curious about grandma Fang's affairs, not just this time but also when you inquired at the clinic last time."

"Yeah." Shu Yu didn't try to hide it.

After much internal struggle, Yuan Gui spoke with a hint of risk, "But Miss Lu, Granny Fang doesn't want to talk much about what happened in the past. If possible, could you... stop asking about it?"

Sighing, Shu Yu replied, "I don't want to ask either, but don't you think I have my own reasons for doing so?"

"What reasons?"

"Granny Fang might be a long-lost relative of my family."

Yuan Gui's steps abruptly stopped, and he looked at her in astonishment. "Miss Lu, what are you saying? Relative?"

"Yes, based on the current information, it's quite likely. However, Granny Fang has always been secretive about the past, and I don't understand why she's unwilling to talk about it. She even said she has no relatives left in her hometown. I don't know what she thinks of us now or what her attitude is, so I want to clarify things with her first."

Unfortunately, Granny Fang didn't want to bring it up, so what could Shu Yu do?

"I have a feeling that Granny Fang has some misunderstanding about her hometown."

Yuan Gui opened his mouth, unable to imagine such a reason.

But immediately, a sense of disappointment swept over him. He and Granny Fang had relied on each other for over a year, and during this time, he had truly come to regard her as his own family.

However, now that Granny Fang's true relatives had come knocking, and it was actually Miss Lu, Yuan Gui thought that perhaps the thread of fate between him and Grandma Fang had reached its end.

He really wanted to treat Grandma Fang as a grandmother or elder, but her life had been so bitter. If she could reunite with Miss Lu and others, her days ahead would surely be less difficult.

He couldn't be too selfish.

Taking a deep breath, Yuan Gui said, "I don't know what Grandma Fang has experienced all these years, but she definitely misses her relatives in her hometown. If you really want to know, there's someone you can ask."
