Chapter 1769: A Conversation Between Husband and Wife

In just two or three days of not seeing her, Tao Shi seemed to have lost weight, her complexion was extremely poor, and her whole being exuded a sense of desolation, as if lifeless.

"Ah Han, take me to see your father," Tao Shi spoke, her voice hoarse and weak.

Meng Han frowned, "Mother, your health..."

"It's alright. I took some medicine, and I'm feeling much better. Let's go to the medical clinic. While we're there, I'll have Doctor Mi take a look at me. If there's nothing serious, I'll stay there and take care of your father. He's suffered such serious injuries, and I, as his wife, can't just hide at home."

"Father has people taking care of him. Mother, you're not feeling well. It's better not to go."

Tao Shi shook her head, "Let's go. I also have something to talk to your father about."

At this point, Meng Han didn't feel comfortable refusing anymore.

However, considering that Tao Shi had just recovered from an illness and that the November weather was quite cold, Meng Han quickly brought out a carriage.

Accompanying them was Shu Yu, who had seen a rare improvement in Tao Shi's demeanor these days. She was no longer being oddly antagonistic and even smiled at Shu Yu occasionally.

It seemed that the recent events had dealt a severe blow to her, causing Tao Shi to undergo a significant change in her personality.

The three of them soon arrived at the entrance of Mi's medical clinic. Doctor Mi had already reopened the clinic, and the original doctor and medical attendants had resumed work.

Meng Xiao Shu was currently resting in a room in the backyard, with his personal attendant taking care of him.

Shu Yu greeted Doctor Mi first before they headed towards the backyard.

Meng Xiaoshu was currently drinking medicine—a big bowl of pitch-black bitter medicine. Even standing at the doorway, Shu Yu could smell the pungent aroma.

Having fallen ill herself over the past few days, Tao Shi had also been taking medicine. Thus, upon smelling the medicine, she felt as if her own mouth was becoming bitter, and her eyes grew teary.

Entering the room, Meng Xiaoshu looked up, instructing his attendant to take away the empty bowl before turning his gaze to Shu Yu and nodding slightly. Then, he looked at Tao Shi. "I heard from Ah Qi that you've been unwell these days?"

"Yes, the doctor said it's due to excessive worry and emotional fluctuations." Tao Shi walked over to his side, naturally taking out a handkerchief to wipe away the traces of medicine at the corner of his mouth. Then, she poured a cup of tea and offered it to him. "Drink some water, it'll help alleviate the bitterness."

Meng Xiaoshu fell silent for a moment, hesitated briefly, and then lowered his head to take a few sips.

Afterwards, he spoke, "You don't need to worry too much. The situation has come to this, and life must go on. Regardless of how you choose, some relationships won't change for you."

His tone was considerably gentler compared to their previous conversation, causing Tao Shi's nose to tingle and her eyes to turn red.

She nodded and sniffled, "I know. These few days, I've been thinking. It seems like over these years, my life has been getting worse and worse. My younger brother passed away, my children aren't close to me, and my husband and I have reached the point of separation. I've been wondering why everything turned out like this. But gradually, I've come to understand where I've gone wrong."

Her words were heavy and profound, catching even Shu Yu by surprise. She hadn't expected Tao Shi to contemplate matters so deeply over the past couple of days.

Meng Xiao Shu and Meng Han were also taken aback.

Seeing their astonished expressions, Tao Shi couldn't help but force a bitter smile. "We've been married for nearly twenty years now, and I've been more attached to my natal family. It's like we're two separate households. The people I feel closest to now should be you, Ah Qi, and Ah Han. Before, Ah Han used to say that I didn't know whose mother I was. Although I gave birth to her, I always sided with Tao Qin. Back then, I thought she was just being unreasonable. Now I realize where I went wrong."
