Chapter 1696: Master Guo, it's been a long time

Xia Yi swung her hairpin at the opponent's wrist, breaking the sword he held.

Then, with swift movement, she kicked the person over and picked up the sword from the ground, rushing forward.

The opponent attempted to block, but was already at a disadvantage.

Xia Yi was an undercover guard by the emperor's side, while the opponent was just a subordinate of the fifth manager in the black market. Even if the opponent had good skills, they couldn't match Xia Yi. Within a couple of moves, she pierced his chest with a sword.

On the other side, Meng Yunzheng had dealt with one person and injured another. The injured person tried to escape to the side, realizing the situation was unfavorable.

Meng Yunzheng kicked him back and said to Xia Yi, "Take care of him, I'll go after Guo Laowu."

"Alright."

Meng Yunzheng quickly ran towards the door. Along the way, he thwarted two bandits attempting to open a cage and release the beasts inside.

Guo Laowu turned around and his face changed dramatically. He had thought of delaying time with his subordinates so they could release the beasts to assist them. He hadn't expected Xia Yi and the other person to handle his subordinates so swiftly.

Unfortunately, the nervous bandits trying to open the cage couldn't manage to unlock it.

Guo Laowu had reached the door and was about to open it when he noticed heavy chains wrapped around it securely.

He looked shocked, with a sword wind already pressing against his back.

With a gut feeling, Guo Laowu dodged to the left just in time to avoid Meng Yunzheng's sword, though his arm got injured.

Rolling on the ground in disarray, Guo Laowu looked up at the towering figure before him, nervously asking, "Who are you, and what are you doing in the black market?"

Meng Yunzheng walked towards him, smiling, "Guo, busy as always. Did you forget about me?"

Guo Laowu upaused, realizing the familiarity he felt earlier now matched the voice he heard. He exclaimed in disbelief, "You, you're Meng Yunzheng?"

"It's me, long time no see."

Meng Yunzheng hadn't expected Master Guo, the manager, to be an acquaintance from the past. This person was the manager he tried to buy an estate from in the black market of Jiangyuan County.

Over a year had passed, and he hadn't anticipated Master Guo becoming Guo Laowu, a prominent figure in the Changjin Prefecture black market.

Guo Laowu was astonished, taking a couple of cautious steps back and awkwardly laughing, "So it's Young Master Meng. But we have no grievances. Why did you come here and stir up trouble?"

"I didn't want to, but Jiang Kuanyu captured my uncle. I had to come save him."

Guo Laowu murmured, "He captured your uncle?"

He knew Jiang Kuanyu had taken someone, but that person wasn't under his command, so he didn't pay much attention. After the beast chaos earlier, the people by Jiang Kuanyu's side were all dead. When he heard someone might be coming for the person Jiang Kuanyu captured, he didn't expect it was Meng Yunzheng's uncle.

If he had known, he would have never agreed.

Meng Yunzheng was someone even his lord treated cautiously, avoiding unnecessary contact until his grand plans were realized. But who would have thought Jiang Kuanyu would provoke someone from the Meng family?

That damn guy. It seemed he wanted to shift all responsibility onto Jiang Kuanyu. He couldn't be more wrong.

Guo Laowu's eyes darted around, then he forced a smile, "There might be a misunderstanding here. I didn't know about this. I'll have your uncle released right away."
