Chapter 568: Striking Up a Conversation

Shu Yu smiled apologetically, "I wanted to know, where can we get drinking water in Zhengdao Village?"

"Oh, that," the woman suddenly realized. "When you entered the village, didn't you see a river? We usually get water from that river."

Shu Yu felt even more embarrassed. "I actually didn't notice. When I first arrived, Master Lan had just finished giving instructions, and I was quite nervous. I didn't dare to look around and just followed the guide. I didn't pay attention to where there was water or farmland."

The woman nodded. "That's understandable. It's normal to feel lost when you first arrive."

"Yes, and we'll be working tomorrow. I don't know if the overseer will be strict. I'm still quite anxious."

The woman smiled and reassured her, "You don't need to worry too much. The overseer wants you to do more work as long as you don't cause trouble and follow the instructions. As long as you do your tasks well, there won't be any problems. The most important thing is not to complain about being tired or hungry all the time."

"Is that so? That puts my mind at ease. Besides not complaining about being tired or hungry, are there any other taboos? And for clearing the land, is it enough to just use a hoe and dig?"

Shu Yu looked clueless, seeking advice with a humble expression, satisfying the woman's desire to teach.

The two of them engaged in a back-and-forth conversation, and they hit it off.

The woman's husband and children were waiting for her to have dinner, but as she didn't return for a long time, they became curious.

The man instructed his daughter, "Pingning, go and see who your mother is talking to and why she hasn't come back yet."

"Alright, father." Pingning got up and walked towards the courtyard gate.

Before she got close, she could hear her mother's rare laughter.

Pingning paused in her steps, feeling puzzled.

In Zhengdao Village, everyone led a difficult life, with heavy chores every day. When they came home exhausted, there was hardly any desire to talk.

Even though their family was now living well, it seemed that they had formed a habit over the past few years, and they rarely had such carefree and cheerful conversations.

Who did her mother meet that made her so lively?

Thinking this, Pingning finally spotted Shu Yu standing outside their courtyard gate.

She was taken aback. "Mother, who is this..."

The woman turned around and immediately waved for Pingning to come over. "It's Pingning. This is Miss Shu Yu, who just arrived in Zhengdao Village today."

Shu Yu nodded at Pingning. "Miss Zhang."

Pingning, whose family name was Zhang, nodded back and turned to speak to her mother, asking her to go back and have dinner.

Little did she know that she could strongly feel a gaze on her from the corner of her eye. She paused slightly and looked at Shu Yu.

Then she noticed that Shu Yu's gaze had been fixed on the scar on her left cheek.

Pingning frowned. She didn't really care about the scar herself, as being able to survive in this place was already a blessing. A scar on her face was nothing compared to having enough food to eat.

But it was a different matter when someone continuously stared at the scar.

Pingning's expression turned cold, and even the woman, Zhang, sensed that something was off and furrowed her eyebrows.

Finally, Shu Yu seemed to realize that they weren't pleased. She quickly explained, "Auntie Zhang, Miss Zhang, please don't misunderstand. I don't mean any harm. I just wanted to take a closer look at Miss Zhang's scar and see if it's severe and if there's a way to remove it, that's all."
