Hey everyone, I'm happy to announce that the first pass on the overhaul to how prey scenes work is finished and ready to test! There are a few things that definitely still need tweaking balance wise, but I figured it would be better to get it into your hands as soon as everything was working rather than doing any major rebalancing on the new elements just based on my own experience. This demo build also includes a brand new tutorial scene to teach you how the interactive prey scenes function! I had a lot of fun with it honestly, the header picture for this post will make sense after you play it.

Here's an overview of the prey scene changes:

  • Completely overhauled how your health works. Previously, you only had 4 total HP and each turn there was a chance to take 1 damage, where the current acid level and the pred's action would influence the odds of taking damage on a given turn. Now, you start with 32 HP, and rather than rng playing a role in taking damage it gets chipped away over time by stomach acid and actions taken by your predator.
  • Along with that change, your Resilience stat now increases your max health in prey scenes instead of reducing the odds of taking damage
  • Each level of Resilience now also slightly reduces the stamina cost of all your actions(or in the case of rest, increases how much it restores)
  • The threshold for the “This is it, one last push!” reminder was tweaked so that it doesn’t appear if the predator’s 25% health message should display at around the same health value
  • Both strength and resilience now directly buff the effectiveness of bracing. (before, only strength affected bracing, and the buff was so mild it was negligible)
  • Predators will now take an action on the same turn the acid level rises
  • Previously, the pred's "stomach power" stat would increase the odds of you taking damage that turn(or decrease if it was negative). With the changes to health, this has been completely revamped into a lasting buff (or debuff if negative)to damage dealt by the pred's actions that some actions will apply.
  • Previously, your struggle actions would be influenced by a hidden "success roll", with a baseline 15% chance to fail and be much less effective, and a 20% chance for a great success that would make it more effective than normal. This has been changed so that your struggle actions will now always deal a consistent amount of damage. (There is still some randomness, but there's never a difference bigger than 3 damage between a high or low roll on any action.)
  • Rest also used to be influenced by a success roll, including an overly punishing failed roll outcome that would heal the pred a little on top of lower than normal stamina gains,  but now consistently restores a baseline 10% of your max stamina
  • The "Give it all you've got" action has been completely overhauled to be more accurate to it's name--it now consumes all of your stamina and deals half that amount as damage to the pred's stomach. You can still use it to insta-win most encounters if you're starting at full stamina, but will always overexert yourself for the rest of the day doing it and can never use it more than once in a scene(since if you fail to get out, you have 0 stamina and immediately get digested)
  • Previously, the "stomach resistance" stat preds had would reduce(or increase if negative) the odds of success on the aforementioned success roll your actions used to use. With that gone, it now directly reduces(or increases, if negative) the damage you deal that turn.
  • Cleaned up/tweaked a lot of things behind the scenes to make it easier for me to work with the system and give myself a few more options to take advantage of in prey scenes

If none of that made much sense to you, hopefully the tutorial will clear it up! This demo build is not the full game, it is a small test zone where you can jump directly into 1 of 4 prey scenes of varying difficulty from the game to test out the changes to the system, in addition to the new tutorial. Please give me any feedback you have after trying it out, things are still in flux here!

Pred scenes are next on the menu for tweaking, it shouldn't be more than a week or 2 before you have a demo for that in your hands!
