The demo for the new system is ready! It contains two prey scenes from the first day that have been adapted to the new system: Sam's and Sarah's. You'll notice that each of them have three difficulties you can choose from- this just changes how much stamina you start with to get a feel for how things will play out if you've already been eaten before during the day.

Any feedback and/or suggestions you can give are greatly appreciated, it'll be a great help in getting this system to a place that feels good! Is it too hard to escape? Too easy? Do you feel like information about how well you're doing/your status is being conveyed clearly enough? Maybe you think it's become necessary to give direct numbers for some things now that the system is more complicated? Does the flow of the scene feel awkward? Is it fun or immersive? Let me know any thoughts you have after playing! And don't hold back if you have criticism.

Keep in mind that neither of these scenes are supposed to be particularly hard to beat at full stamina even if you don't use the "Give it all you've got" option, though Sam should be harder to escape than Sarah. Also, I will mention that in the full release the plan is for there to be ~3 generic messages for every action/level of success that are selected randomly for variety, but in this demo every outcome only has one message you'll ever get(with the exception of a few scene-specific messages).  Still let me know if you find the current implementation repetitive! That's valuable feedback even if I'm anticipating it to be the case.

Enjoy!

Do you want us to DM you the feedback, or just write it in the comments?

osmiumorchid

Either works! If you have a lot it might be easier to do it as a dm since you can't do line breaks in comments(as far as I'm aware...)

I think that it is good, might be the tech I was using but I noticed that it was slow at times which if you are inpatient, could lead you to click the same actions several times that then all happens at once.

I feel like Hard difficulty is still a little too reliant on RNG. Sometimes I start the fight on Hard with Her stomach is starting to kick into gear, you need to get out! after just resting. And then you get 2 turns and you're toast. I'm even getting the same thing on the easiest setting. 3 turns and done.

osmiumorchid

I was worried about that, thanks for the report! It should be pretty much instant when you click one of the buttons, but there's actually a lot going on every time you click so some devices might take a moment to process. I'll look into optimizing it a bit more if I can, but it could be that you'll just need to avoid pushing the button again if the text hasn't updated.

Are you saying you're getting a message about the stomach intensifying right at the start in hard mode? Because that shouldn't happen- the stomach getting more dangerous is one of the few aspects that has 0 RNG and should happen after the same number of actions every time.

Well I finally had some time to test it out, and so far it seems good! The only thing so far I've noticed is something strange happening with Sam; twice now I've somehow managed to survive multiple turns struggling conservatively ( and resting ) with my head under acid. This happened during the second "phase", so to speak. I even managed to escape her the first time this happened, after bathing in her stomach for at least five turns, just by using the weakest struggle. Is this supposed to be a thing with this encounter? I just want to double check, as you've mentioned before that some preds might toy with you.

Not at the start, but after the first action. It seems inconsistent in that regard as well. Sometimes it won't show for 2-3 actions and sometimes it appears after the first one.

osmiumorchid

You must be very lucky! Technically the chance for you to take damage never reaches 100% from just the acid intensifying, so it's not impossible to survive playing very conservatively like that. I will take a look to double check there's nothing funky going on though, thanks for the report!

osmiumorchid

That's unusual! The acid level should only rise after every 3 actions, never any more or less, and it seems to be working properly on my end. Are you maybe confusing the "Her stomach is starting to kick into gear, you need to get out!" message with the one for you taking damage? The first damage message is also written in yellow ("You can feel the digestive process starting to effect you.")

I see one or the other. How many turns are you generally give to escape on Hard? Because I get anywhere from 3 to 6. I just did 3 runs from Sam on hard and had a 6, 5 and 5 again.

This is a link of what I'm talking about. https://imgur.com/8GaJHJ7 Turn 1 rest and then I get that. I also see both of those yellow messages on turn 3 quite often (for ramping up and also taking damage) https://imgur.com/eAVX4cp Or in this case, I see the damage message before the ramp up.

osmiumorchid

Ah, I see! So the message "You can feel the digestive process starting to effect you" is indicating that you've taken damage. That can happen after any action, but gets more likely the longer the scene lasts. The other message is telling you that digestion has ramped up and you're more likely to take damage now. You have four health, so(unless you run out of stamina) you get a minimum of four actions before you're gurgled, but on average you should be able to get ~6-7 in. I think I may reduce the chance to take damage before the acids have kicked in

osmiumorchid

Just to update, this was a bug! So thank you for reporting. I managed to forget the line of code that actually lowers your health at the highest damage level, whoops!

I really like this new system, I feel like I have a lot more agency rather than reloading the whole day/saving and reloading. I like the mentions of what the predator is currently up to. If I were to suggest anything it would be more that in terms of variety or even some taunting dialogue. Outstanding work as always.
