Newest merm! Hope you all like her 😌💖

Random rant: Today I was at a coffee shop with my sketchbook and had some time to think about my art. Sometimes certain pressures roll into my mind when I think about my future with art; comparisons of my work to other professional artists’ work creep in and I begin to feel restless, like I need to reach their lofty standard as soon as possible. In those moments, my expectations of my inner artist become overwhelming and suddenly drawing the simplest thing is burdened by obstacles of dissatisfaction. Then, artist block takes hold.

If you ever feel stressed about meeting a certain standard with your art or compare yourself to other artists and feel discontent, remember that your work is one of a kind; we all have a special line, a unique brushstroke. Enjoy the phase that you are in and don’t rush it. Comparing yourself to other artists and striving to be like them will lead you further away from your true authentic inner artist.

Just some thoughts I’m spilling over here 🙈 Hope everyone has a great night/morning/afternoon/evening! 💖

Pff, I relate so much to what you said. And as a bonus, Instagram is not helpful at all. As I gain new followers, others drop out, and it make me wonder why, you know? I try not to let it affect me, but it does. And it affects my skills too. I got unmotivated and the last drawing I did was awful! I mean, as a kid I used to draw better than this! 😂

I totally relate with you! It’s hard sometimes because the number of followers or likes on a post can feel like a measure of how “good” we are as artists, and if it’s less than others, then it can feel like we aren’t as good. But everyone is on their own separate path and we all have something unique to give the world ❤️

Thank you Shannon! I stepped outside my comfort zone quite a bit with this one 💖

First of all WHOA that is such a beautiful piece! And second of all, it’s really weird you posted all of that because I want to do my own draw this in your style for reaching 2k, and I’ve been able to draw SO MUCH recently without issue till this. Suddenly there’s so much pressure I feel like to make it perfect for all these different reasons and I can’t come up with anything, it’s created such a massive block in my mind. You summed that up so perfectly in your rant how that happens, especially with comparing yourself to others in an unhealthy way.

I’m glad it could resonate with you! And oh my goodness, I completely understand that pressure because I’ve felt it with all my DTIYS challenges. It feels like it needs to be the best work you’ve ever done haha 😭 I’ve found that when you expect so much from yourself like that, artist block becomes really hard to shake. But if I could offer some advice, don’t worry about it being perfect! People already love your work and are supporting you ❤️ And personally I think people like a more simple DTIYS because it makes it easier and more approachable for them to tackle!

Aw you are so sweet!! Thank you for the kind words :') I totally understand that pressure as well! It is definitely hard not to compare yourself, it takes time to become happy and content with your own work <3 but we will get there!
