Two thoughts: I suspect the owl was seeing the dust hits and tumbling bullets and mistaking the movement for prey. Next is that one hit per plate is more than sufficient when you're packing almost 500 grains and a starting frontal area bigger than most hollow points post-expansion! Great job :-)

Given that in early tests the hard cast bullet would pass through 14 wet elm planks each 1/2 inch thick, and in a 9th May 1874 trial the bullets passed through the carcass of a horse at 100m, then knowing what it's like to get hit by one is simple: You ask the man behind you if it hurt him as much as it hurt you! See pages 190-191 of the Martini book by Neil Aspinshaw. As a side note, the famous cover photo is of a Welsh soldier from the Brecons: The Welsh single malts from the nearby Penderyn distillery are very fine, and made using a very novel process compared to the crude and primitive Scotch kind. Easiest way to get some in the States would be for a flyer to pick some up from duty free on the way home via Britain.
