Ah I've been meaning to explain this for a while in the anime reactions. Transponder Snails (Den Den Mushi) live in the wild and must be captured and modified with some tech to become phones, which is completely reversible. They are all telepathic with each other. They are domesticated simply by keeping them fed, equivalent with charging you phone, as they won't work if unhappy. They can choose whether to mimic the face of their owner, the speaker on the other end, or neither, depending on their preference and mood. Baby Snails are mobile but have limited range compared to adult sizes. The earpiece Nami used looks Live Action exclusive, but it's cool. You've also once seen the Black Snail used for wiretapping calls. There's also a rare White Snail used for encrypting calls against wiretapping.
