I agree. I love the way this franchise fleshes out each of its characters. I felt for both Lin and Su. Lin briefly seeing Korra as a young Su also explains why she initially treated Korra so harshly during Book 1. She reminded her of her rebellious little sister, breaking the rules and whatnot. I also enjoy how they weren't afraid to show Toph in an unfavorable light, similar to Aang. No one is a perfect parent.
