I love this episode because Mihawk showing up here is like if the final boss of a video game pulled up on you immediately after you start the tutorial, it's a gentle reminder of what the Strawhats are trying to compete with, just in case you were getting a little too confident in their strength. To put what you've seen from them so far in comparison, the One Piece world has four main seas: North Blue, South Blue, West Blue, and East Blue. We're in the East Blue right now, which is known to be the weakest of the four seas. A "Great Pirate" in the East Blue is a second-rate pirate in the other seas. So the fact that the crew is so much stronger than everyone else here is really just because they're big fish in a small pond.
