I hinted at something coming up when you got to the Sanji Island episode, that is generally viewed very favorably by the LGBTQ community. This is that thing :P You said it pretty well yourself, yes they are shown to be a bit weird, but always with a positive slant. They are people found a way to create their own paradise in the middle of hell by forging their own queer community, which is a pretty good take on the subject matter, imo. Not to mention how the show hypes up Mr.2 as a genuinly cool character, while not toneing down his queer-ness. While I'm not a fan of the excuse that "it was a different time", it is worth mentioning that this came out in 2010, where positive, strong, queer representation was pretty slim, specially in anime, and it fits so well with the main themes of One Piece, being about freedom and the ability to be yourself, no-matter what the world says.
