Also you weren't sure how to interpret the island sanji landed on, which is very fair. I just wanted to share some cultural reference here (otherwise just wait, cause things will become more clear on how this can be interpreted). Quick note, I'm not Japanese so I'm mostly relying on ressources on the internet, so take it with a grain of salt xD. The island is a reference to "Okama" culture in Japan, which is a slang term for gay men that cross-dress for one reason or another. Back when this was first written, Japan culture didn't distinguish much between trans women and dragqueens, even amongst those that lived that livestyle. So within that context the people Sanji is meeting here are mostly meant to be understood as men dressing as women, not as un-attractive women. You can read up on it a bit more if you want. The initial representation here can definitly be seen as problematic by Oda, and I don't want to suggest I'm speaking for everyone with this, but I do wanna say that the majority of queer people I know or have heard discuss some of the upcoming things love the representation, not this one episode, but where things go, so keep an open mind and see where things go. You've made it pretty clear in previous videos that you are very pro-LGBTQ which is awesome, so just wanted to give some context on this. o/

Yeah, that's basically what I assumed was happening. It was one of those moments where it's kind of unfortunately insensitive but clearly not on purpose - so I don't hold it against the show at all. And I know if I did a big discussion about trans women in the discussion, I'd get a lot of exhausting comments on YouTube, so I just kinda moved on, hahaha. Like I was thinking about "Well Oda's probably drawing them as crossdressers but they are seemingly permanently presenting feminine and taking feminine names, so they're probably just trans women" but I think a lot of that discussion can be left to another day - or maybe to a person that isn't me (some straight cis dude), haha. I know that Oda's a super loving and accepting person, this was just a little gag that meant no harm, so it's all good. I know about at least one upcoming thing in One Piece that seems pretty pro-LGBTQ. I have a LOT of LGBTQ friends while not being a part of the community myself (being in acting/D&D/board game spaces tends to lend to making lots of friends there), so I can get protective at times and go off on tangents, which some don't like, hahaha. But in this moment, it's cool to just let it be.
