Hi, patrons! We just wanted to take a moment and let y’all know what’s happening here in Chicago and where we’ve been. The Black Lives Matter movement is here and is making incredible strides. Black voices are finally being heard. Black lives are finally being prioritized. In Chicago drag, that is especially true. You may have seen the Chicago Drag March for Change on social media. It was truly incredible to witness. With that march complete, there now comes a lot of work and change. Boystown bars, Sidetrack, queens who are non-POC: we now have to step up and do the work to make things right. This week, there will be a town hall in which black performers and employees will let Boystown bars and performers know what they need and how those bars and performers can improve. For this most important reason, it just hasn’t felt right to make a Drag Race review. Our focus remains on what we can do to make Chicago a welcome place for POC and, more specifically, black queer & trans people. Following this town hall, we may be able to step back to making reviews and content for you, but we want to wait and see what the black community needs first.
IMHO chatted amongst ourselves and definitely want to do some sort of All Stars review, especially since our queen Shea is KILLING IT. So we hope to return soon, but we will definitely be back on a weekly schedule for Drag Race Canada…with an extra special surprise! We will explain then what all we have planned, but just know that IMHO is SO grateful for the voice and platform we’ve been given, and we only want to use that in a positive way to better serve our community here in Chicago. Big things are coming!
We know that June saw a lot of new patrons, and we are SO glad you’re here! Given our recent shift though, YOU may not be as glad to be here. Understandable. For that reason, if anyone of you would like a refund on this month’s membership, please email Dixie (dixielynncartwright@gmail.com), and she will Venmo you! No questions asked!
Also, we wanted to leave you with a speech from the Chicago Drag March for Change that we felt was especially powerful. Zola is a black trans woman who was wrongfully exiled from the Chicago drag community. Despite the fact that she was treated so poorly, she still came back to ignite positive change at the march. Shea Couleé posted it on her Instagram, so perhaps you've heard it already, but if you haven't, please take 10 minutes and watch. Please listen to her words. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CBdz9LalEAd/
And if you are able, donate to an incredible organization that Zola founded: Molasses Chicago (molasseschicago.com)
We love you and we thank you for your support!
