Maybe it's just that their skin polymer sticks together when the eyelids are shut for a while, and it has to be pried open? At least on the chassis models where the eyes can close.

Seeing as they can make money by renting out their processing power, it seems likely they'd have some thoughts going through their heads even in a standby mode. I suppose we just don't know how their cognition looks, since it must be at least a little like ours, but inherently different.
