this had to involve Emily, at some point

Bailey Tighe

I accept Emily as the leader of my micro-universe. Imagine all of the fun and wacky things she would come up with!

Anonymous

Geez louise Emily, chill! It's very typical of her to completely ignore the "oh no we're all gonna die" stuff and just think about the cool science one could do though

Michael Boettger

Hi Emily, long time/no see. Also if anyone here could pull that off, yeah, it would be Emily. How do we know this hasn't been done, and the QC universe is a result?

Lucanid Landman

This is how physics-related SMBC comics get started. The ones where everyone inevitably dies.

Anonymous

Agent Emily, push the little red button.... *Woooosh*

Akashimo Hakubi

All I think when there's a big. Red. Button. Is, no more.

z

The paint wouldn't even be dry before Emily pushes the BIG RED BUTTON.

Shawn K. Younkin

I DO WHAT I WANT!!! ::pushes the big red button::

Czarzhan

The shiny, candy-like button??

Miyaa

Somewhere some physics YouTuber is wondering who keeps asking them about micro-vacuums.

Yonatan Zunger

There is, in fact, some good reason to believe this is exactly how we got here. It doesn't even require a special force; the expanding bubble could easily pinch itself off into a new universe. Which is to say, QC is the secret prehistory of our universe. If things seem weird to you, blame Emily.

Captain Button

There is a Walter Jon Williams story about this, but naming it would be a spoiler.

Captain Button

“There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.” - Douglas Adams

Summer Sudbrink

“Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.” - Terry Pratchett

R L

I can only handle so much science, man.

Anonymous

Isn't this, like, the plot of Greg Egan's novel, "Schild's Ladder?" (The new universe grows at 1/2C, and once we figure out how to cross the barrier, it turns out the other side has much better physics...)

Michael Voorhis

I like the reference to Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse five, in which the Tralfamadorians know about, and can/will do nothing about, their own impending accidental destruction of the universe.

FuzzyDragon Cosplay

I’ve had to press the big red button befor, it can suck, but it can save your but

Anonymous

I wonder what Raven would think of this...

Peter Jensen

See, I've never believed in any gods as such, but I've always believed that we have the potential to one day effectively *become* gods and figure out ways of budding off new universes in which to continue, once our current one winds down towards heat death. And if we accidentally wipe out the universe in the process, at least we tried and didn't go gentle into that good night!

Panic Blitz

As of this moment, I can only hear Emily's voice being the same voice as Entrapta from She-Ra.

Sleepy John

"Callahan's Key", by Spider Robinson (if it hasn't already been cited), in which a bunch of telepathic barflies Save The World from the vacuum deflation.

awgiedawgie

The fact that Emily has already put that much thought into this is rather disturbing in and of itself.

Anonymous

Hey, Emily! (I got nothin' on the science. Please don't blow us up, Emily!)

Fart Captor

I love Emily so much ❤️

ysth

Who could possibly be in Emily's karass?

Bagge

FOR SCIENCE!!!!

Eric Lusby

Somebody needs to introduce Emily to Hanners' dad. They could solve all the world's problems! ...And invent a ton of new ones we've never even considered.

Some Ed

Old problems tend to have partial mitigations in place and stuff, or at least known workarounds. New problems don't. Thus, I tend to prefer to at least assess the first fix before implementing the second, third, fourth, fifth... Emily seems to be the sort to implement the tenth before assessing the first if she can get away with it. Hanners' dad seems to be the sort to just keep implementing things and let others worry about the fallout. They make me nervous.

Clifton Royston

There's a Ken McLeod book with a space drive which creates universes as a side-effect of its operation.

Dr. Otter

"So I said to myself, 'What's the worst that could happen?'"

Anonymous

I'm now reading everything Emily says in Entrapta's voice.

David Howe

Would be more worried if Emily said "They don't usually expand more than few miles if you are careful"

Anonymous

Curse you; that's 100% correct and now I'm stuck with it! ^^

Joseph Bonnar

She can't. The government has placed real limits on what she can and can't say to others.

David Howe

Only when they know. I am surprised they don't have a full time agent watching her by now...

Uniquitous

The jolly, shiny, candy-like button...

awgiedawgie

What’s kind of frightening is that Raven probably has thought of this. Emily’s considered the theory, but Raven’s probably already done the calculations.

Czarzhan

Well, they do, but it's an AI and Yay has been subtly subverting/redirecting them for some time now. :)

Joseph Loder

Emily is my spirit animal.

J.M. Hall

A universe where people have REAL stars in their eyes.

Bill Hall

I wonder how many times a day Emily’s tracking team has to call the boss and ask, “Do we pull the trigger now?”

Bill Hall

And, what is the longest anyone has ever lasted on the team??

Anonymous

I'll say it again, this is gonna be how you cancel this comic when you get tired of it

Joe

but it's a big red button. must. push. big. red. button.

lilibat

I am loving where this strip is right now.

Mark

So we veer immediately back to ro-butts, of course!
