Aw hell... Now I gotta translate that....

Anonymous

For all of us, yes please, please translate

Anonymous

Is... is Melon using dial-up? Also who’s the nerd who’s gonna translate that Morse code?

z

Are they...acoustically coupling?!?

Magic Chopstick Games

Man, this comic is like a battle fleet without air support

Anonymous

Hands up who else immediately dashed over to a morse code translator website to read this?

Joseph Bonnar

Melon got a new hair don't!

Anonymous

Both Melon and Yay are saying "INDEED. IT WAS VERY QUAINT." in the morse code. I assume the audio is dial-up, considering the commentary.

Joel Bateman

Someone is bound to translate that. And also post that wave form.

Jim Feldman

I'd of thought she'd be more of a PSK31 fan, but there's no school like the old school. I used to be able to whistle up 212A compatible modems or at least get them to start the handshake.

spectria.limina

Melon: INDEED. IT WAS VERY QUAINT.

Ryan

Melon is looking very All-Might with that hair.

Anonymous

No one's going to ask the obvious question, is Melon a part of Yay's network?

Joel Bateman

It's Melon. Do you need to ask how she functions? I don't even think Melon knows how she functions.

Anonymous

Dunno about the waveform, but both of them are saying "INDEED. IT WAS VERY QUAINT." in Morse code.

Mitchell Sealy

I forget, did Yay say the thing about how Melon isn't stupid, she just thinks differently, in the comic itself, or was that somebody in the comment sections? Melon smashes all her dishes down to a fine powder or something, and Yay explained that Melon had been trying to store them or wash them or something, and this was technically the way to get the most dishes in the least amount of space? Ringing a bell for anybody? This would seem to be in line with that. Melon apparently is versed in a number of languages and communication channels, but many of them are dead or obsolete. The most eloquent woman in the room but nobody can understand her.

Joel Bateman

Melon is possibly and eccentric genius. Her processors are permanently overclocked, so she's trying to process everything at once, but instead it makes her...Melon.

Shawn K. Younkin

Melon "INDEED. IT WAS VERY QUAINT." Roko "INDEED. IT WAS VERY QUAINT." Sigh....

Anonymous

Why did they both say the same thing? I am so confused. Also, you guys have to use a web site to translate morse code? Poseurs. ;)

Thomas A. Dennis

I used to hate that modem startup sound, but if I heard it now, I'd come a-runnin', just to see who was kicking it oldskool.

Jim Feldman

A few weeks ago I actually heard someone use the modem screech as a ringtone.

Fart Captor

Oh my god Melon's hair is friggin adorable

Anonymous

This is my favourite.

Noise

Melon was acoustic modem dialing and handshaking. Yay's sending out something very high-bandwidth, from the image. Not the Bloop signal, though. SETI spectrogram?

Anonymous

Third panel makes sense. Isn't the fourth panel just visual graphs of audio signals?

Creepy Cat Lady

I was really hoping someone would translate this, thank you for your service to the patreon. :)

Anonymous

Reread that pannel as both of them saying it at the same time

Sleepy John

I remember when your computer shrieked at the telephone, and the telephone screamed back, and then you were ready to go on-line.

Sleepy John

I think it stopped being 'your' apartment the day Melon burned a portal in the ceiling.

Devin Forbes

I read the panel in the voice of the 90's phone scream.

Anonymous

Is Spookybot doing the modem sound in her spectrum as well?

Anonymous

Melon and Roko:

Anonymous

It looks a bit like the Aphex Twin waveform that produces his face...??? Can anyone confirm?

Anonymous

"Indeed. It was very quaint."

RobertC

QAM matrices?

BobC

When did Melon go all Wood Sprite?

Bagge

I like Melon's haircut. Super... melon

It's just... all the Clickwise, you know? It puts people off, Carl.

Trigon Manthree

Once at a mid-1990s computer club meeting (HAAUG), I was working behind the share/freeware disk purchase station. The club librarian mentioned, in passing, to a customer, the modem noise. Instantly about 5 of us started making the modem connect noise (yes, from our mouths). The slow turn and glare we received from her just made us bust out howling with laughter. Thank you for dredging up this treasured memory. :-D

Erin Moriarty

Melon is so adorable when she smiles.

Also, to answer Roko's questions: Yes, this is her life now

theaardvark

The Sinclair ZX Spectrum had the best noises when it was loading.

And then your mother screamed at you to get off the internet so she can make a call

The waveforms don't look like what I remember my modem doing. now I wonder what speed that wave is for. They were all different depending on what speed you were trying for. I was actually still using one in the early 2000's. I had 'acquired' an old external hardware modem. 33.6 until I called a number at US Robotics. Then it became a 56.6. Couldn't believe how much faster the computer was when I moved the modem from internal to external. Good times.

Mark

I tried using an internal modem, but it hurt when I walked.

Melon: INDEED STOP IT WAS VERY QUAINT STOP newFriend: INDEED STOP IT WAS VERY QUAINT STOP

Anonymous

anyone slightly disturbed by Yay speaking in Seismic Waves?

Anonymous

I am now almost positive Melon has a sister named Carrot with remarkably similar hair to this style....

Anonymous

Melon has antennae....?

Fart Captor

Oh no I just realized how cute of a thrupple these three would make

Anonymous

Is this the first time Melon hasn't greeted Roko with "Socially Appropriate Greeting"?

Joe

pretty sure there are some 60s kids who can recognize it too

Anonymous

Spooky bot looks like it's producing part of a Magic Eye image to me.

Peabody

I thought at first, "Dial up handshake and.. tone pack?"

Anonymous

aw c'mon. what's the morse code say?

Anonymous

https://morsecode.scphillips.com/translator.html Melon says ".. -. -.. . . -.. .-.-.- / .. - / .-- .- ... / ...- . .-. -.-- / --.- ..- .- .. -. - .-.-.- " which translates as "INDEED. IT WAS VERY QUAINT." Yaaaaaaaay responds with the same.
