I’m not fully aware of the history but it is a mystery because everyone on the ship abandoned it and nobody knows why and this was trying to give an in universe explanation for why. That the Daleks showed up and terrified everybody so they abandoned ship. It reminds me of the in universe explanation for why Agatha’s Christie went missing for two weeks and nobody knew why.
