I was definitely inspired by my own real experiences too. He is meant to be deliberately unlikable, because of where the story goes.

At the same time I can imagine what it must be like if you are into big bears but can't gain weight and just get ignored. That said, if someone is just not attracted to you then they can't help it. It is worse when it is treated like a deliberate conscious choice just to save face by the rejected party.

Well put point. His being an asshole is born out of frustration, but it also doesn’t excuse his behaviour. It’s tricky to balance him being unlikeable vs setting something karmic up that is interesting and engaging, from a writing perspective.
