A few years ago I watched a documentary on mars and what it might have looked like in the days people made up stories of Greek Mythology. He suggested that Mars was closer and was regularly being hit by lightning bolts of some sort. Hence the stories. He showed that a lot of the surface damage on Mars looked similar to arc welding marks. I don't know how much was true but it was fascinating. Its since been pulled off youtube.
