I’ve been wanting to make an animation like this for a long time. The first man’s anger is obvious and harsh. His abuse is clear. I specifically chose a piano solo of Gymnopedie during his tirade to represent how his abuse is singular and private, hidden behind closed doors. Though he is essentially saying the same thing, the minister’s tone is kind and inviting. For his part, I used the professional mic. I chose an orchestral version of Gymnopedie to represent the collaborative nature of religion’s message, making it public, cultural, and accepted. The house and church share some architectural elements, hopefully evoking some feeling of continuity. The juxtaposition is designed to remove the character of the Abrahamic god from all the structures designed to make Him palatable, and clearly compare Him to something more befitting of His true nature.

PS. I had my wife take my son out of the house while I recorded this one. For the angry man, I used my camcorder and stomped around in the kitchen, knocking things around and yelling, which is highly uncharacteristic of me and probably would’ve scared the hell out of him. I was worried the neighbors would hear and get the wrong impression too. Then again, when I made my King David video, I was yelling about foreskins, so it couldn’t be much worse than that.

Abrahamic faiths resemble domestic abuse so well because they’re both rooted in power and control through dependency, degradation, and fear. This is antithetical to benevolence.
