This is one of the most important, life-saving things you can teach your dog! If you work with your dog on "stay" whenever you open any door, you can get to a point where your dog will automatically check with you before going out of any open door! Generally, yes my dogs will stay, but I don't trust them to in a high excitement/high distraction situation. The best thing I ever did was baby-gate my foyer area. I have two walk-through gated baby gates to keep the dogs away from the doors (front door and garage entry) completely. No worries with kids coming and going, pizza delivery is much calmer, and I can bring groceries in the house with no worries!

Sort of the same as Amanda said. My dog will stay every time, but if an animal were to run past the house, I wouldn't count on her staying put. We sit and stay pretty much every time we go out the door. I probably need to start planning and practicing when I see people walking their dogs down the street.
