Thank You! So appreciate information on small dogs! So much is about larger dogs, so this is great! Now, if you can help with housebreaking a small dog; which is really hard. I mean housebreaking to go outside. So many other owners do the pee pad inside; but I want my little boy to be a big boy and go outside. He is almost 2 and not reliable.

For house training, my advice is the same regardless of the size or age of the dog. Focus on very strictly controlling your dog's environment by having them attached to you with a leash while you're at home, and keeping them in an area where you can tolerate potty accidents while you're not there to supervise him. Give him lots of opportunities to go outside so you can focus on creating the habit you want! Search my channel for "potty training" to see many many examples of how I go about this!

Thank you, Zak! I do have another dilemma, but hate to bend your ear too much! :) I have him gated in a large area; kitchen family room with tile. He never goes there. But! Now 1-2 times a day if I go upstairs he starts howling......loudly....for about 5 minutes! It is so nerve wraking! We have focused on not returning downstairs until he is quiet; but it is not working. He is a 9 pound Havanese and I have heard they are hard to potty train and prone to separation anxiety. By the way, we re retired so he is not left alone for long periods of time. Is he spoiled? He has been to obedience training, is good with basic commands and excellent with other dogs and children.

That was actually going to be one of my questions of the month. How do you stop the barking due to separation anxiety?
