I’m literally asked hundreds of times a month, “What breed of dog do you recommend” for any number of reasons. Given my experience and what I’ve come to learn, I find it very unfortunate that many people get so hung up on this. Especially given how many dog training professionals give in to this notion that somehow arbitrary breed labels are an accurate description for how a particular dog will learn, behave, and how their personality will be. Certainly, some dogs do largely adhere to their breed stereotype. But most do not completely conform behaviorally to their breed conventions. That said, there is still something that will give you a much better picture as to how any dog’s personality and trainability might shape up.

Hi Zak! So if someone wants to get a puppy, say from an animal shelter or maybe even a breeder, how do you gauge energy level of a very young dog? Puppies who will turn out to be Level 3 adults will need a lot more rest when they are young, and puppies who will grow up to be Level 1 will still have some crazy puppy energy at first, right? Are there specific things you can do with puppies to predict their energy level for the majority of their lives? Or if energy level is very important to you, what age in general will make it easiest to determine what kind of dog a puppy will be?
