The term "librarian" doesn't convey fully what Roshim is talking about, but I can't figure out a better word. "Gnostician" is my runner-up, but I don't want to alienate folks. Let me know your thoughts!

In this scene, Roshim's motivations will be outlined and the journey's stakes will be uncovered, as well as his lies

I think using something like Librarian as a word that has cultural implications in a fictional world is a strong hook for the reader tbh. I love coming across things like this in fantasy. Kind of prompts reflection on what the nature of a librarian is, both in the fantasy world and the real one. A protector of knowledge? A teacher? A collector? I think it can enrich the setting efficiently & without getting bogged down in too much jargon.

And I think having Roshim say he might be "a poor librarian" gives enough space for the reader to understand that there's something more to the role than we might think of a contemporary western librarian

Trying to look up the word "gnostician" comes up empty, with a related term Gnosticism which is a religious thing. So if you want it to have religious connotations you might go for it, otherwise I agree with Adam. I think librarian is a good choice, if you drop a few hints that it means something more than our modern definition of the word
