Roshim defines himself by his strength, but that means in the presence of someone who doesn't need it, he struggles with his identity

Roshim is trying to convey that in Aphaelia, he understood who he was and defined himself by his role in usefulness, but during this journey, he is undercut by Avalon's ability to outperform him. In a very real way, on this journey in which he is supposed to do something important to secure his place in his home and with his beloved, he does not feel like he has anything to offer
