Funky Patrons,

I readily admit that I was inspired by the latest season of Stranger Things, but a Roller Rink map had been previously suggested to me by a Patron, so it’s not the only reason.

I fondly remember my skates. A lot of us skated to school when I was in grade 6, and there was a rink we could go to on weekends. Roller skating seemed to die not long after and the rink became a crappy 'All Ages' club.

I am not old enough to remember the 1960s, but I was happy to imagine a rink festooned with floral patterns.

The building itself could be adapted for all sorts of uses. For the map pack, I turned it into a shelter/base of operations set up in the aftermath of some sort of terrible disaster.

I also turned the rink into a Battleground, where I imagine teams face off in brutal gladiatorial contests while rabid fans place bets and cheer from the sidelines.

Finally, I changed it into a 'Flat Track Roller Derby' arena. Roller Derby leagues took a big hit due to COVID. I hope it comes back in a big way. How can you not love a sport where the athletes have names like Brawllipop and Lady MacDeath?

Some Roller Skating Trivia

The first public roller skating rinks opened in 1857.

1979 had two roller skating movies: Skatetown, U.S.A. with Scott Baio and Patrick Swayze, and Roller Boogie with Linda Blair (the kid in the Exorcist). Watch the trailers!

In 1983 President Ronald Reagan declared October National Roller Skating Month.
