this is purely from imagination. Usually, when I begin a piece, I have an idea in mind, but sometimes I'll go in blindly, letting the painting lead the way. When I do have a specific idea, I start by gathering references, taking elements I like from them. Often, I'll find a photo that captivates me, and I'll paint it, interpreting it in my own style, altering colors or lighting to suit my vision.
