Sometimes the audience just has to catch up to the film. I remember when it first came out, the problem was people didn't understand what the heck it was about. I hate to say it but I think Lovecraft was somewhat of a niche writer, people know the name, but not his writings, which I think affected this movie at the time.

Mister Midnight

I wouldn't call this Carpenter's "last great movie", cuz I think he's got more in him. Considering his efforts over the past decade in doing music, consulting/producing on movies and comics based on his works, and a new upcoming video game called Toxic Commando, he might return to the director's chair one of these days.
