The joke about Australians is a call-back to an English tradition that we Australians are such a coarse and uncouth collection of ex-convicts that no proper Englishman (or Englishwoman) would want to be seen dead in a ditch with us. It makes sense that the writer (for want of a better word) of this script would reference Australians rather than Frenchmen given the boat is travelling to a remote location where Europeans are surely thin on the ground.
