Yemi 語学者 (BLJapanTaiwan)

A whole bunch of language and culture notes to make this special make sense. First, Tane calls Yutaka “Yukata” the whole show. The yellow outfits they are wearing are called Yukata. They are a lighter version of kimono. Dad makes a pun when Minoru is jealous. He said, now you are done grilling meat and you’re grilling mochi. Grill mochi is a euphemism for being jealous. Then he goes on to say he is full. ie, Minoru does not need to be out here grilling meat. Minoru getting jealous over the text makes more sense in Japanese. We often drop pronouns and just say the verb. So what coworker types is “Suki”. That is just like, so it could mean I like it, but it could also mean I like YOU. So Minoru misreads it as the second. Yutaka jumps to a conclusion about the letter because the Japanese is not really “thanks for everything”, it is more “thanks up until now.” We often use it at the end of something. Like students will say it to teachers on graduation day. When Minoru and Yutaka are having their discussion outside, and get confused, you can hear a crow caw. In Japanese, crows say ka-ka. Sounds like baka, which means idiot. You can see/ hear it a lot in anime and comedy scenes of dramas.
