Obsession isnt rational, and it can be even more emotional than love. Because Ming is obsessive, he isnt in love with either Tong or Joe. Joe is delusional. He takes things that Ming does and says and give them more meaning than they should have. He pick and choose what he wanna see and hear. Tong is a narcissistic sociopath who uses Ming’s feelings for him for his own gain. Bc Ming’s family is the main funder of his series, as we heard in the first episode. And thus leads Ming on, and is afraid that Joe will result in losing that control over him.

I think for Joe and Ming, for both of them, it was their first "relationship/love" I think this was the first time Ming liked someone, so of course it was more intense and dramatic feeling when it started and he was younger. Ming crushed on Tong, and then, because Tong started dating his sister, got to be around and see him be charismatic. Tong, obviously, dotes on Ming, so Ming built that relationship up to be more than it is in his head. I think Tong, being a grade A asshole, could tell that Ming like him, so he flirted with Ming just enough to get Ming thinking it maybe could more. Ming also was that dramatic about the engagement, I believe, because of the guilt he felt for liking his sister's boyfriend. She is a great sister so I think he genuinely felt awful to be infatuated with her boyfriend. Same goes for Joe. He admitted that Ming was kind of his first foray into romance and sex. You would hope that someone as old as Joe, even with no experience would recognize that Ming is the worst. But I think, having been alone so long, since his family died when he was young, Joe was starving for affection. And was willing to take what ever crumbs he could get. And as Topher said, the D was good, and that will make you blind! I am pretty sure that if Joe had never met Ming or had least not met him until Sol came back and confessed, Joe would be with Sol and not think twice about Ming. As for Tong being the worst.... just wait for it!
