this episode is tough just because there's a lot of stress in every team. editing as i go, blah blah blah i have... some complicated feelings on matthew and how he handled the situation, and he did get knocked out of my 9pick because of it, but it's not something i'd hold against him outside of the survival show setting because i understand people react poorly under stress. that said, i do think the guy desperately needs PR training + some teamwork courses, because a lot of his issues would be solved if he learned not to say every thought that popped into his head. one of his issues i think is that he seems to value the actual number/seconds next to the part vs the actual content of the part, which isn't a good way to judge it AT ALL and it's really been backfiring on him. a lot of what he says to hanbin and seungeon definitely comes off as really tone deaf unfortunately, as it wasn't just a matter of seungeon fitting a part more-- both of them were struggling with their parts and fit the swapped part more. (there's also the matter of him saying he'd be doomed doing vocal 2 when he's p4 talking to p17 seungeon which.... yeah.) matthew was thinking about himself over the team, but he got so blinded by the number of the part that he wasn't thinking about what would help him do good either. like i said though, i understand why he was frustrated and don't think he's evil or anything. some people just don't handle pressure well and need training for this kind of thing. i also have a lot of empathy for seungeon. he's the only non-top 9 member in their group and was very timid about advocating for himself because of it. the flipside of matthew is i think it seems like yuehuaz all had a ton of pr training before being sent, because they all try to minimize any opportunities to be perceived negative. i'm sure seungeon, in addition to being nervous about being the only non-top 9, is also very aware of how the fanbases of the f4+matthew could spin him being assertive if he tried. he just seems like someone very aware of his position in the show who lacks a lot of the more aggressively competitive side a lot of other trainees have. he still wants to do well and get the parts he wants, but he seems to know he's in a perilous position. anyways, if anything this whole arc just solidified that jiwoong is one of the strongest leader candidates we've had for a debut lineup in a long time. he knows exactly when it's time to lay back and let people sort things out themselves and when he needs to step in and gently but firmly put his foot down and talk. he isn't even the leader of this team, but his natural leadership abilities still shone through. he never oversteps hanbin's authority, but he's able to correctly read the vibe of the group and what hanbin is worried about and speak up first so hanbin can segway into it himself. on the flip side, shanbin strikes me less of a group leader and more of an unofficial performance leader. he's great as a confidant and dance instructor, but struggles with interpersonal conflicts-- especially with people he's close to like matthew, who he doesn't want to upset. jiwoong seems very objective. i can see bep1er shaking out to be LEADER: jiwoong / CO-LEADER: hao/keita/phanbin / UNOFFICIAL PERFORMANCE LEADER: shanbin supercharger and switch were also so tense, but for less interpersonal reasons and more the general doom and gloom of being the leftovers. they did really good with what they had though, and while i sadly expect these teams to get massacred in the elimination (especially supercharger which sucks), haruto really, really shone and i hope he's able to claw his way through. and phanbin fully entered my top9 this round. anyways, on a lighter note: en garde is my favorite produce~ song of all time. you can tell one of pentagon's top producers made it, because it's so good. it was really made for gunwook, but i think everybody shone a lot. i was really happy how well hiroto did. they definitely did get a bit complacent in their training because of how solid their team is, but they course corrected very fast after they were talked to about it. my one complaint? what on EARTH was that camera work. it's fine. gunwook slayed. my son is humble and kind and a killer on stage. i also LOVED hearing his vocals in this. people forget he's an all-arounder in the vocal sense as well because he hasn't had the chance to use them much on the show! also the family dinner was really touching. i wish they'd moved it all to next episode and aired all the stages this first week, but it is what it is. i'm a sucker for the emotional people-focused scenes in survival shows. OH. context for dongmyeong: hiroto is RBW japan! since they couldn't get his family, they likely sent the RBW staff member and dongmyeong to support him! you can see a few cases like that for trainees, especially G group, where their family couldn't get there.

Moonlight Is A Mixer

just wanted to say that dongyeong was there for hiroto because they’re labelmates ahhahah

jodie

It was really long because he writes it in 3 different languages so I suggest reading yourself but my highlight was him complimenting zihao and calling him his husband haha

Secretninja312

I've basically plowed through all your reactions in the past 3 days and I keep meaning to say, your ability to predict MNet's editing and next move is impeccable.

Tesa

we share the same thoughts about matthew! you worded this better than i could haha additionally, i am really worried how well he's going to vibe with the group if he ends up debuting. no hate towards him of course - he's young and still learning about life, i'm very sympathetic towards that, but i just have a bad feeling about it and i can't seem to shake it off.. on a brighter note! thank you so much for pointing out jiwoong's leadership skills! i didn't quite notice during this episode, but you're totally right

Tesa

this is the first time i've really *seen* Wang Zihao in a performance, he really stood out! i am utterly obsessed with his first appearance in the song and have replayed that part of his fancam an ungodly amount of times lol his facial expressions and the extra spice he gives his moves is everything! so curious for next ep to see what his rank is..

safe_cave

Lmao it gets to a point where you've seen enough mnet shows that it becomes fairly easy to spot patterns

Jess

any parent reaction is guarenteed tears from me. no matter the final line up we all know these boys are going to be insaneeeeeee....... mayhaps we can get 5th gen bg that stand out among all of our insane gg

Oof Oof

Finally someone points out how creepy Lip J's reactions to the boys are. And the others encourage it too. I'll fight to protect them I swear

safe_cave

Yeah I've been side-eyeing it for a while but her reactions to yujin here just..... too much. Like, she most likely means zero harm with it and I'm all for complimenting and being like "oh wow so handsome/cute etc" but fam he's literally just turned 16 maybe tone it down a smidge

Jongwoo's lack of confidence broke me in this ep, so it was a little hard to watch, but still, I LOVED the performances and I'm amazed at the high level these trainees managed to get to, especially "supercharger" since most of the team did so well with such limited amount of time 💕💕 also while watching this ep I can't help but think about that fact that Jongwoo got visits from his dudebros and not his family, so in my head his letter was basically; You suck🤪 but good luck.

i felt so conflicted during the matthew & hanbin drama because i could understand both sides. i think it’s just the environment they’re in, everyone is on edge. i hope matthew doesn’t lose any fans because of it though

same here, i'm worried matthew already has from what i've seen, i think we've found the su ruiqi of the season...

Irving

I honestly understand Matthew, like he even ask for seungeon's opinion and they just were okay and went with it, and after a day and having so little time to prepare, like 2 days he was just told to get the other part when in my opinion he didn't sound bad at all on his part is just that seongeun will be better on that part than the one he had before. Like I would feel frustrated too, but at the same time jiwoong and hanbin were just thinking about the team dinamic and how seungeon sounds better with a higher register than the part he had before. so at the end both sides are understandable, no one was really wrong, is just a rough situation....

hayun lee

the reason why the others encourage it is because her role assigned by mnet is to be representative of noona fans, even when yuehuaz were going around doing small fanmeets people kept asking yujin to say "noona i love you." the industry is inherently predatory towards minors, and that's not something that changes overnight. the only way to actually protect him for now is to not vote for him in hopes he doesn't debut when he's still a child and suffer the same predatory harassment idols like taemin did.

Thank you for saying this as I totally agree, plus you wrote it so much better than I could 😅 like they even agreed to give Matthew that part at the start and they didn’t show anything at the self evaluation so I’m guessing no one wrote that they thought Matthew sounded bad

God, episode 11 was hard to sit through. Chen Kuanjui and Haruto are two of my picks from the begining (though Jay is still my #1) and while I knew KuanJui was at the risk of elimination, I had hoped he would pull through since he did amazing in "Over Me" and had the benefit. But alas, it wasn't meant to be. It hurts to think that he performed on Mcountdown and participated in the fanmeeting while having to hide the fact that he was eliminated. Haruto, I honestly was shocked he was eliminated. Though he hasn't cracked the top 9, he's been pretty popular on the show and a name you do hear in discussions, I thought he would've moved up a few ranks. So that one hurt to see. I think the ratio of K-group vs G-group is just sad, It's 12 K vs 6 G, and I just have a feeling we're probably going to see a similar ratio in the final group. It's also interesting seeing the vote breakdown between Korean vs Global votes. Like, Keita is #1 in terms of global votes but #17 in Korean?!?! And Jay is #18 in Korean votes?!? Also if you look at the line up in the korean votes, there's only 2 G-group guys (ZhangHao and Kamden) in the top 9. Anyways, personally I'm hoping Jay pulls through in the end. As for the final song selection, it honestly hurt to see Jay getting pulled away from the main vocal position. Like, I get that it's a competition, Hanbin being #1, he has the right to choose the part he wants, so he's not in the wrong for moving Jay to the only other part left. But it just sucks because Jay has been hovering just outside the Top 9 and I think the main vocal position is fitting for him, even Hoetaek and Taerae didn't go after him. Hanbin on the other hand, has been #1 since the start of the show and basically guaranteed to get the killing part, plus he would've killed any part he performed, he didn't "need" the main vocal position. That being said, the hate some people are throwing at Shanbin is ridiculous. He didn't do anything wrong and he definitely can handle the main vocal part. Also we have to remember that Hanbin has been an angel this entire show, he's always helping others out, making them feel better, and he is well liked, this is the first time he went after something he wanted, so from that angle, I don't blame him for going after the main vocal position. edit: whoops! Commented under the wrong episode xD
