This might be a silly question but I thought I'd ask anyway: The contest rules state that we cannot use a model with a base that is more than 100mm in size, but I'm really wanting to paint that Sky Kraken up, however it's listed as a 150mm base. The only reason I'm asking is because he's shown in the painting contest picture above, so is the Kraken going to be accepted in the contest, or do I need to print up something smaller?

Hopefully I can enter this month , thanks!

Slightly tangential post here, I'm not a great Painter... Not Motivated enough to spend the time for Warhammer magazine painting contest level... looking at your release photos... I think you apply a ~ neutral base coat Gray/tan/brown or pewter perhaps on some sets (air brushed?), wash to set shadows and dry brush highlights. Yess you painted lightning blue and some other stuff a mauve/purple but no belts and buttons etc. shield embossing isn't gold or red ... Whatever your method, it really pops the details and seems almost achievable with my mediocre skills/patience if i have analyzed it correctly. Any advice/corrections you can give to target my efforts to similar effect for modest time and skill?

Hello john, The images you see here on patreon, except the showcase posts, are rendered images so these effects are added digitally. That being said, our patrons have achieved far greater results than ours and most of them do that without being professionals. Our advice is to you is to head over to our dedicated Discord Channel (invitation in the Download Links Post) or our FB group. You will find a very active community with lots of patrons that want to or already have tried similar methods like the one you are describing and will be happy to share their experience and help you !

Hey John. I find that if you prime your models in black, then zenithal highlight with grey, white or the like; then you can wash then drybrush for a pretty solid effect. Citadel contrast paints are also an option to increase the speed of your painting. Hope that helps!

Rastagnon

Zenithal highlight? is that the method of using airbrush feom above to simulate a light source? Found some videos, thanks i will try that, hadn't gotten an airbrush previously

b00sk0r

Hi John apologies for the late reply - you can use a spray can to achieve zenithal highlighting, which is what I do, but using an airbrush gives you a much smoother finish. Happy painting!
