As you know, last month saw some issues with payment processing. Patreon, ever transparent, has sent me a message letting me know about how, why, and what to look forward to in case we run into similar troubles.

In case you were wondering, they had to transfer the processing of payments for adult material to an overseas processor in the UK. This is apparently necessary for the continuation of adult material on Patreon.

If you have any problems, you can contact your bank and assure them that the charge is legitimate. You can also reach out to the Patreon support team for help. Anyone who has a declined payment will get a message from Patreon with options for what you can do (so they tell me).

Patreon's been pretty responsive and communicative over every issue I've ever had with them. Here's hoping things are painless. If you have issues with your payment, you can always catch back up once you re-establish your contribution.

Thank you!

Can confirm, if payments are declined, notifications from Patreon are received, usually with the option to change payment method or stating that payment will retry in either 24 or 48 hours.

That's weird my country wants to ban adult material unless you have a licence. So why they would choose a UK transaction company?

More than likely it is a money issue. Charge too much and lose business. Charge too little and lose the business itself.

Do US based banks not allow NSFW entertainment charges? Do casinos and certain bars use offshore banks too?

Far as I know it's not the banks. It's the credit card processing company. These are private companies that set up processing gateways for online businesses, which process whatever credit card companies you sign up to allow. It doesn't have anything to do with banks as far as I know. I remember having to switch once when I was running my website catalog the hard way, and having to find another that didn't care about adult work.

Yeah the banks do not care what you are buying (unless it constitutes violating anti-terrorism or international sanctions type laws), their concern is whether the fraud predictor algorithm thinks your purchase was made by a crook, and international + adult charges are both higher risk of being a crook. Hence the August massacre last month. And yeah, lots of payment processors have depressingly arbitrary adult content restrictions. Over the years as I have dabbled in adult art websites I've watched some of them migrate through different payment processors trying to avoid censorship. In particular PayPal has an issue with certain types of adult content, but the new Patreon adult content rules avoid that (and then some).

I had this issue now this month. For me it worked by switching away from PayPal to directly charging the CC. It sucks that a company that's supposed to protect your CC data now appears to be abusing that power by choosing where you may use their services.
