Thadius comes from a long line of barbarian heroes who have traditionally lived in the wilder parts of the world. He's pretty much the first in his family to grow up in a place with decent access to things like books and career options that don't require the strength to strangle a dragon. Given the opportunity his ancestors never had he grew up to be a massive nerd.
