Consider an alchemist. A figure who mixes various ingredients into beakers and test tubes, often causes explosions both intentionally and unintentionally, and is often on fire. Very intelligent, but lacking common sense. Now consider this in a rat form: A manic grin, or perhaps a panicked expression from the area around it's shoulder that's currently on fire. Raggity clothing that's burned in places. Probably red shirt and blue leggings, and maybe a pair of spectacles perched on the brim.
