2023 in Review (Patreon)

Last year I said 2023 would be a little quieter than the previous. Well, it might have been quieter in terms of releases, but it was a whirlwind in many ways for me. I wish that I had great revelations in store, but instead it was a mix of some things that worked well and some that didn't.

TWC

Though you guys have caught up to me, I still managed to get two books out this year: Bloodcrete in January and Wakespire in August. Plus we got the third and fourth audiobooks out, and the omnibus edition on top of that! The omnibus started slow, which was a bit of a disappointment, but it has kept on trucking ever since the release. Hopefully some new readers join us from that.

I have nothing ahead except the chapters of Deathseed, which won't last as long as you might think. The ninth book is set to be a fun one, though, with lots of revelations to various mysteries, so I look forward to writing that and you should all get to enjoy at least some of it next year.

Reflections

I am extraordinarily fortunate to be in this position, making enough off my writing for a permanent career. Sometimes I feel a bit greedy, though, wanting more when I already have so much. I'm not the sort of person who finds happiness in spending money, but I do have a deep desire to keep working on different kinds of stories and finding readers passionate about my work.

Over the course of my career I hope to write a great many things. That means various experiments, and they won't always go well. But I was reflecting how I can't put a price on having an audience that cares about the future of TWC (and my other work). It's hard to say what the course of the series will be this year, but I intend to take the story to its conclusion and relish the steps along the way. ^-^

Looking forward to 2024

TWC8: I'll keep posting chapters of Deathseed.

TWC9: Though I haven't started, there is no reason to believe we won't get into the ninth book during next year. I know what it will cover, but haven't decided on a title.

TWC Webtoon: Looks like it's not happening. I could probably swing it financially, but I don't know that my schedule can handle it.

Audiobooks: Maybe, depending on Travis Baldree's schedule.

New Covers: Another "maybe" as I've been saying they might come for a long time but they haven't manifested. I will need to make a final decision soon this year, either staying the course or beginning a new pattern.

Side Projects: Last year I wrote several things I have long wanted to try, such as the heist fantasy some of you saw and a science fiction novel. While I may move some of these forward business-wise, I'm not likely to spend much time writing anything else in 2024.
