Hey, everyone! This update will be a bit shorter, as I'm just checking in with a few things, but it's also an invitation to ask me questions.

You can check out my new lore post, last in the AHM set, though there may be another bonus post yet to come. I've put the mini-map above, but there's a bigger world map at the link.

There's a bit more fanart over at the sub, allegedly just the first in a set:

Please look forward to some TWC content coming down the pipeline! I have planned another character conversation about ascension, but feel free to ask anything, either topics you'd like them to cover or questions for me. ^-^

Questions: do/can soulhomes have basements? Also, what sort of cultural markers for “home” are relevant for soulcrafting (for instance, would a nomadic culture that largely lives in structures that are torn down and reassembled daily, or species that create nests instead of edifices)?

How weird can cantae flow and power sources get?

Good.T

What is a difference between a talented/promising soulcrafter and a mediocre one if they follow the same blueprint?

Basements: Yes, but not until later. This will be a major development when it's introduced. The cultural question is more difficult to answer. There are some people who say that it's impossible for nomadic cultures to build strong soulhomes for this exact reason, but that's not really true. For example, there are soulcrafters who live in reassembled structures who carry some of these principles over into their soulcrafting, leading to reconfigurable soulhomes. Species that create nests will be a major focus of the fifth book, so I'll skip that question for now.

Pretty weird. Just because plants and glowing rocks are the most common power sources doesn't mean that there aren't crazier options out there. Cantae flow can take surprising forms, but isn't quite as variable. It ultimately moves something like a gas or liquid, so you can't have a cantae flow that teleports or anything. It's possible to have messy zigzagging flow, but not without losing efficiency. There are some unorthodox blueprints that try to leverage a chaotic flowing pattern instead of a smooth one, which can trade stamina for power.

Interesting question! Let's assume that the mediocre soulcrafter isn't mediocre due to laziness or cutting corners. If they had a head start, or the talented soulcrafter got stuck at a bottleneck, the two could have soulhomes that looked very similar. They wouldn't be identical, however. The mediocre soulhome's blocks wouldn't be formed as precisely and there would be hairline cracks in the construction due to insufficient willpower. If their blueprint uses carvings or other ornamentation, the mediocre version would be cruder overall. Due to starting from the same blueprint, they'd have basically the same capacities (like increased strength or specific abilities), but the superior soulcrafter would have stronger versions. They'd have exactly the same quantity/intensity of cantae, but the better soulcrafter could make theirs last longer due to better efficiency. For an ascension or two, they might be able to keep up. Eventually, however, the small errors would start to catch up to the mediocre soulcrafter. Damage would be done during an ascension, leading them to either fail or get stuck with a weakened design.

Are there structures that straddle the ruler/authority boundary at all? Why does one need a new power source for the next trip of levels?

sarahlin

The ascension between Ruler and Authority is difficult, but once your soulhome is expanded, there isn't an unbridgeable gap between them. Theo is going to divide his, but not everyone does. Structures that span multiple floors are more complex soulcrafting and will be explored later. Power sources are a relative thing, but you almost always need more than one. Fiyu's blueprint has a new power source in the center of every floor, for example. One of the soulcrafters in the second book had multiple power sources on each floor in order to give himself near infinite stamina.
